How to Measure an Air Filter for Replacement

To request a replacement air filter, record the actual frame width, height and depth with units, then document the header, seal and airflow direction. The size printed on an old filter may be a nominal designation rather than its measured dimensions.

Start with safe access

Follow the equipment’s service instructions before accessing a filter. Have a qualified technician handle the inspection when the equipment or working conditions require it. This guide describes the information to record for a quotation; it does not replace the equipment’s maintenance procedure.

Measure the frame, not just the filter media

Measure the outside of the frame in the width, height and depth directions. Mark those directions on a sketch or photograph so the supplier can interpret the measurements consistently. Record the unit beside each value. Measure more than one position if the old frame is distorted, and identify damage rather than treating a bent dimension as the intended size.

If the original drawing is available, send it together with the measurements. Do not invent a clearance allowance or assume a new frame should have exactly the same dimensions as a damaged old one. Ask for a fit review against the holding frame.

Record the parts that affect sealing

  • Header or flange dimensions and how the filter sits in the holder.
  • Gasket location, thickness and the face on which it is installed.
  • Retaining clips, rails or other features that restrict the replacement.
  • Airflow direction as shown on the equipment or filter.
  • Available space for installation and removal.

Add the details for your filter format

Pocket / bag filters: distinguish the header dimensions from the overall pocket depth. Record pocket count and available downstream clearance. A folded or deflated pocket in a photo is not a reliable measurement of the operating space it needs.

V-bank and box filters: record the rigid housing depth and header or flange geometry. Include views of the sealing face and the side of the housing.

HEPA configurations: provide the specified seal interface and installation drawing where available. Confirm the required class and documentation separately from the dimensions.

Photographs that make a quotation clearer

Include a front view, a side view, the seal or header detail and a readable product label. Add a clearly positioned ruler when practical, but provide written measurements as well. Avoid photographs in which perspective obscures the frame edges.

Does a matching size mean matching performance?

No. Dimensions establish only part of the replacement specification. Also provide the required filtration class, test standard, airflow and acceptable pressure drop. Ask for the proposed configuration and its documentation before approving the replacement.

Send the measurements for review

Email the drawing, dimensions and photographs to lijiawei@xingmaienv.com. Include the quantity and delivery destination so the discussion covers both the replacement configuration and the order requirements.
